The wave from 1936

Alvar Aalto drew the vase for a glass competition in 1936, inspired by water and rolling landscapes. The shape is the same today – only the colours and sizes have grown in number.

Mouth-blown and polished by hand

The glass is blown at the Iittala glassworks, cut by hand and polished in several steps. Small differences between vases are part of the craft.

Product FAQ

Which size should I choose?

95–120 mm suits a small bouquet or decoration on a shelf. 160 mm is the classic size for a normal bouquet. 220–270 mm takes long-stemmed flowers and branches.

Does every piece look the same?

No. Each vase is mouth-blown by hand, so small bubbles, shifts in colour and variations in shape are part of the craft – not flaws.

Is it dishwasher safe?

No, wash it by hand in lukewarm water with a little washing-up liquid and dry with a soft towel.

How fast will it arrive, and can I change my mind?

Delivery options and times are on our Delivery page. You have a 14-day right of withdrawal and a 3-year right to complain – see the Returns page.

Description

The Aalto vase began as Alvar Aalto’s entry in the Karhula-Iittala glass design competition in 1936. Its undulating shape – “aalto” means wave in Finnish – broke with the straight lines of the time, and today the vase is one of the best-known symbols of Finnish design.

Each vase is mouth-blown at the Iittala glassworks in Finland, cut by hand and polished in several steps. The dark grey and clear 140 and 200 mm vases are blown in a wooden mould that is only used a limited number of times – which gives each of them its own slightly textured surface.

Pick the size by the flowers: the lower vases take a short bouquet or stand nicely empty, the taller ones lift long-stemmed roses and branches. Colours range from clear and opal to copper, linen, moss green and cranberry.
